Waste Disposer

Back in what many people think of as the “good old days,” disposing of food waste was not much of a problem. The majority of people lived in rural areas, often on farms, and they were able to simply throw their old food scraps out into the yard. For example, they often threw food scraps into compost heaps, and then used the compost generated to fertilize their crops or flower gardens. But during the 20th century, suddenly the majority of people began migrating to cities. That was when food waste disposal became a big problem. Now people lived on top of one another in tenements and the only way to throw out food was to toss it into the streets. Now that people no longer had land or space for compost heaps or gardens, food became a problem to dispose of. Luckily, the advent of waste disposers changed all this for the better.

A waste disposer is an electrically powered device that is generally installed under a kitchen sink and is used to grind up and dispose of food scraps. The waste disposer’s job is to shred food scraps into small enough pieces that they will pass through plumbing without causing a troublesome problem such as a clogged drain. Waste disposers are extremely useful to apartment dwellers or other people who simply do not have the land available to them to throw scraps outside and allow them to be reclaimed as nature intended.

Did you know that waste disposers are used most often in North America? Many Europeans, Australians and Asians do not use waste disposers at all. Interestingly enough, though, the Hungarians have used waste disposers often enough that the device has earned a strange nickname – the kitchen pig. Though, when you think about it, kitchen pig is actually a very apt name. Pigs, like waste disposers, get rid of your old kitchen scraps for you!

Did you know that food scraps range anywhere from 10 to 20% of household waste? Well, if you are an avid cook and you do not have a waste disposer, then you have probably guessed that that is the case. Did you also know that kitchen waste can be used in all sorts of ways that benefit the environment? The only problem is, in order to use kitchen scraps to benefit the environment, they have to fulfill certain conditions. If kitchen waste is burned, it does not generate energy due to its high water content. If buried in a landfill, kitchen waste can actually do more harm than good and cause the release of methane gas, a major contributing factor to global warming.

Waste disposers, though, are able to render food scraps into something near liquid, which allows them to be processed through plumbing and sewers much like water and other human waste. This is one of the best ways to get rid of food scraps and still keep a healthy urban area and be kind to Mother Earth.

For proper usage of your waste disposer, always run water when you are running the waste disposer. Otherwise, you may notice a ear splitting grinding sound. This means that your waste disposer is working dry. One handy trick when it comes to cleaning your waste disposer is to throw in some egg shells. Egg shells sharpen a waste disposer’s blades and allow it to continue to shred and grind food scraps for years to come.

If you are in the market for a waste disposer, keep in mind their many benefits, including helping you get rid of food waste and helping the environment. Also, safety first. If you should ever have to repair your waste disposer, never, ever stick your hand down near the blades without first being absolutely certain the waste disposer is disabled.
