Video Splitter

People who organize and prepare tradeshows, professional sporting events, training seminars, even speakers who present motivational speeches and other such events, use a video splitter to show the same video images on multiple video screens throughout the room or area where there are large groups of people gathered. Using a video splitter allows a large audience to see and hear what everyone who is sitting up front is seeing and hearing. Hotels, restaurants, gymnasiums and other such places will sometimes also use a video splitter with multiple monitors as a way to enhance the feel and look of their place of business. Video splitter technology is used to accomplish this task and is fantastic technology to use anytime you want to display the same images on more than one monitor for a number of reasons.

A video splitter will display the same signal source on various display devices at the same time. Video splitter product models vary and some have more ports than others. Some individuals use the term “distribution amplifier” when they are talking about a video splitter. Both terms mean the same thing. A video splitter will transmit a single video signal to multiple monitors over a standard CAT 5 cable. The signal can be sent up to 500 feet away, depending on the splitter you use. The audio will be transmitted over the CAT 5 cable at the same time as the image is being transmitted. Remote locations can also receive video and audio signals that are being transmitted with the same CAT 5 cable.

When an S-video splitter is used, images from a single S-video and sound source are transmitted to a maximum of 8 S-video monitors. The image and sound transmission can also be sent to televisions and projectors. If you have one of the older NTSC based video applications, the S-video is best. You can find an S-video splitter that has either 4 ports for 8 ports. They also come with or without sound capabilities.

If you want to transmit your video onto 16 DVI-D monitors from one single source DVI at the same time, a DVI video splitter will give you the best image. Digital signage applications need a DVI video splitter that is compliant with HDCP and is supported by DDC2B protocols. This type of video splitter can have anywhere from 2 to 8 port sizes.

A VGA video splitter will also split and transmit a single video source up to 16 different display locations. A cascade feature on these splitters also allows you to display images on up to 90 different monitors at the same time. Pairing up multiple 2, 4, 8 or 16 port video splitters is the method used to accomplish this and this is why these are splitters are the most common ones used. The VGA video splitter will support UXGA, SXGA, XGA, and VGA resolutions.
