Stainless Steel Cooktop

Unless you are an avid cook and love to be in the kitchen cooking you probably have never given the idea of a stainless steel cooktop a second thought. If you are designing a new kitchen you may be thinking of adding a stainless steel cooktop along with other stainless steel appliances like a stainless steel oven, refrigerator and sink. When it comes to stainless steel, the type of finish you choose is important. For instance, if you want to have your stainless steel cooktop lend a quiet and cozy look to your kitchen then you should choose one that has a matte finish. If you want your stainless steel cooktop and other stainless steel appliances to give your kitchen an ultra modern look, then chose one that has a high sheen and a polished look to it.

You can find stainless steel cooktops that are gas or electric. They even make some induction stainless steel cooktops. Cooktops come in various designs and have various numbers of burners on them. You can find a good stainless steel cooktop that has 5, 6 or more burners. Even less if that is your preference. There are models that are sealed or open for gas burners.

A sealed stainless steel cooktop is nice because if you boil over something it can be cleaned up quickly and easily. You may not even have to remove the pot from the burner if it is an electric cooktop. A spill on a gas stainless steel cooktop is not cleaned up as easily. If you have to scour the spill you can scratch the stainless steel easily so you have to be careful how you clean stainless steel. Another draw back to stainless steel is that heat discoloration is normal with a stainless steel cooktop. Also, if you have a gas cooktop the grates have to be hand washed because if you put them in the dishwasher the rubber grommets can get lost. The grates on a gas cooktop tend to rust if you put them through a dishwasher too.

Stainless steel is not considered to be a magnetic metal. It is actually a steel alloy that is mixed with other metals. Most stainless steel has about ten percent chromium mixed in. The chromium is what makes it possible to repel most stains so that it looks fresh and new if kept clean. The chromium in the stainless steel also prevents it from rusting. It would be awful if your stainless steel cooktop developed rust all over it. Another metal often used in a stainless steel cooktop is nickel. The addition of nickel helps to strengthen the stainless steel compound. However, if it has nickel in the mix the cooktop will not be magnetic.

The LG LCG3091ST 30” Stainless Steel Gas Cooktop is a good model. It has 5 sealed burners and 3 continuous heavy duty cast iron grates. It also features blue LED backlight knobs. The Whirlpool GLS3665RS is a 36” gas stainless steel cooktop that also has 5 burners. It sells for around $850. If you shop around you may be able to get better pricing.

If you are interested in an electric stainless steel cooktop then check out the GE JP328SKSS. This is an inexpensive 30″ electric cooktop that has 4 burners. A unique and inexpensive stainless steel cooktop that only has two burners is the Whirlpool RCS2002RS. If you have an outdoor kitchen area on your patio or an additional small apartment for an elderly parent on your property this model could be ideal. This is a black on stainless steel electric cooktop that sells for less than $200. Like anything else, you should do comparison shopping before you buy.
