Infrared Heater

The infrared heater generates heat with an electric element or gas burner and directs the heat outwards using a reflector. It is also known by other names, such as radiant heater and quartz heater. They are generally larger than a fan heater but also quieter because it uses a reflector instead of a fan. They are inexpensive and are available in a range of styles.

The three main designs of infrared heater are the dish, box and tower. A dish heater resembles a cross between a desk fan and a satellite dish. It has a concave reflector and a heating element in front of it. These parts are surrounded by a cage and mounted on top of short stand. Although it looks unattractive, the dish heater is very effective because of its large reflector.

The box heater is a large cube that has its heating elements, reflector and fan mounted deep inside it. It is more attractive than the dish heater but still looks rather plain and functional. The tower heater is really just an extended version of the box heater, with a small base and a slender case, but looks more attractive than the other two types.

The infrared heater uses either electric elements or gas burners to create heat energy. An electric element is made from a long length of coiled wire and encased in quartz glass tube filled with an inert gas. The heat is focuses out the front of the heater by a concave reflector, similar to how a headlamp focuses light in front of a car. Infrared energy is not visible to the human eye but a small amount of visible is light is also produced, giving the elements their distinctive red glow.

An infrared heater will normally have a low and high heating mode but the more expensive models sometimes have more than two. When the low heat mode is set, some models simply turn off one element, while others reduced the power to both elements. If an infrared heater also has a fan, its speed can be adjusted to better control the heat coming from it. Other features to look for when deciding which infrared heater to buy are an oscillating mode and a remote control.

Safety is an important consideration for all small heaters, including the infrared heater. It must have several safety features and conform to design standards. An auto-shutoff thermostat cuts off the power to the heater when its temperature rises too high and turns the heater back on when it has cooled down. However, heaters are designed so that they do not overheat under normal condition, and the main cause of overheating is an object blocking the heater vents.

A tip-over switch is another safety feature found on most small heaters. It is installed in the base and cuts off the power when the heater is tipped slightly. They are sensitive and are sometimes trigger when the heater is placed on thick carpet or rugs. This can be prevented by sitting the heater on a wooden board or other hard surface. An infrared heater should have a case that is cool to touch when it is operating so that children and pets do not burn themselves on it. It should also have a grill that prevents the hot elements from being touched.

An infrared heater is generally more expensive than a fan heater but still inexpensive compared to an air conditioner. As with all heaters, they use a lot of power and have a high running cost. However, if just one room requires heating in the home, it is more economical to use an infrared heater than to turn on the central heating.

    I love the Comfort Zone, the timer is the best thing I set it to turn on 30min before I get home from work and my house is perfect.
