Electric Range

A long, long time ago, thousands of years before the present time, our ancestors only had one way to cook the mammoth and aurochs meat they brought home from their intrepid hunting trips – they roasted it over an open fire. Though some people, especially those avid grillers out there, would argue that cooking meat over a roasted fire is still the best way to go when it comes to preparing a tasty meal of meat, most people consider themselves lucky to live in a time when we have many options when it comes to cooking. For instance, we have the microwave, which uses microwaves to cook our food from the inside. And we have smokers, which give our food a delicious, smoky flavor. We also have ovens, which allow us to bake and broil our food until it is just right. And, of course, we have electric ranges that allow us to perform a whole “range” of cooking options when it comes to our food.

The range as we know it has been around since our earlier ancestors stopped cooking over an open fire. When ranges were first invented, likely by some intrepid person who wanted an option for cooking their food more evenly, they were fueled by an abundant resource – wood. Then people realized that a black substance pulled out of the ground – coal – burned more quickly and efficiently and allowed them to use the wood for other things, such as building houses and furniture. But later, we realized that ranges could be powered by two things – gas and electricity – and since then we have not gone back to coal or wood very much, except perhaps on a camping trip or when grilling over charcoal briquettes on a 4th of July picnic.

The electric range often becomes the focal point of the kitchen. Wonderful smells often emanate from the pots simmering on the stove top and people are, of course, drawn to them, alerted by the rumbling in their bellies. There are many different types of electric ranges, including stainless steel electric ranges, refrigerated electric ranges, and large commercial ranges. Of course, a commercial electric range is only recommended if you plan to open a restaurant or have an extremely large family!

While gas ranges are known for their even cooking temperature and for the ability of the cook to precisely control cooking temperature, many people opt for electric ranges when in the market for a range for their kitchen. For one, natural gas is not available in all neighborhoods or areas, and propane – another fuel for gas stoves – can be costly to buy and a pain in the neck to install. For instance, people with young children may prefer an electric range because the alternative, gas, means that an open flame is present in the home when someone is cooking. Children are often drawn to the things most forbidden to them, and fire is one of the most dangerous of those tantalizingly forbidden objects. The combination of a curious child, a busy or absent parent and the open flame on a gas stove can be a deadly mix.

Of course, electric ranges also have their disadvantages. For example, electric ranges take longer to heat up. They are also more difficult to control, especially when trying to boil a large amount of water or simmer a sauce in a precise way. This difficulty in controlling temperature is one reason that most commercial chefs prefer gas ranges over electric ranges.

If you are in the market for an electric range, be sure to ask a sales or customer service person about your options and which electric range will be right for your home and family.

    I have spent 3 days researching free standing ranges. I’m so discouraged reading all the bad reviews from consumers about companies who should know better than to build garbage. I’m talking $1000+ ranges here! There are so many disappointed consumers out there and for good reasons. Kitchen appliances have become cheaply made and rife with problems. Consumer Reports will recommend one and then actual consumers will let you know how bad it really is after using it in their homes! So, you cannot depend on CReports because they don’t use the appliance every day–day-in and day-out like home cooks do. There is no test like one from a user who owns that appliance.

    It is time for a totally Consumer driven website that “outs” the bad guys who make shoddy appliances which die in 2yrs. Buying extended warranties is now a must because consumers are so use (more like trained) to their appliances going down at inopportune times like Christmas Eve!

    Those warranties add $129+ and over to the purchase of every appliance and there are no guarantees that they will be honored. More complaints exist about that are out there as well.

    If you can spend over $2-3k for a kitchen range–maybe and I mean maybe, you’ll get more time with it before it breaks but that still is no guarantee. I did see many very expensive models being complained about just as much as the lower costing models.

    I am totally discouraged about the products that are being sold today. I have a KitchenAid that is 15 yrs old and I paid $1200 for it. I have never had a problem until now. Trying to replace it has taken me into the world of kitchen ranges that has been enlightening but so disappointing.

    Our appliance companies have some explaining to do. Consumers will actually dump an appliance (land fill) if it breaks because repairs are so costly. Most say theirs lasted 2 yrs before problems set in. There is exploding glass, burned appliances that almost burned down their house and on and on. It is ridiculous. Then there is the Company who will not stand behind a clearly poorly made appliance–even if it almost burns down your house! You’ll get no sympathy from that appliance manufacturer.

    So, someone needs to set up a Consumer website that “outs” these bad appliances and it must be listed by model number, year purchased, and price. I know if there was a site that consumers would be forewarned of potential problems and maybe appliance manufacturers (I am talking to you KitchenAid) would start making reliable appliances that have longevity again.

    We just need one great, easy to use, consumer complaint super site— which is very organized–by model # (so important), company name and the problem to stop this appliance abuse! Americans no longer have the buying power they use to have therefore, we need quality products and our landfills are too full of appliances that have not had a lifespan beyond a couple of years.
