Carpet Cleaner

Carpets get dirty as we walk over them with our shoes that have brought soil from outdoors any anywhere else we may have been. If you live in a wet climate your carpets are bound to get dirty over time and if you have kids or pets the carpets will need to be cleaned on a regular basis. The problem is that when you call in the professional carpet cleaner they want a few hundred dollars to clean the whole house, and you may not need the whole house cleaned. If you would like to decrease the number of times you see the professionals every year and be able to spot clean when and where you need to, buying a carpet cleaner is a great option.

There are a lot of really nice carpet cleaner options on the market today. The technology really has come a long way in recent years and these machines are easier than ever to use. If you can vacuum your home, you can clean your carpets with a carpet cleaner. You’ll find when you start looking around to buy one that there are many different options on the market.

First, there are two main types of carpet cleaners; there is the spot cleaner and the full sized cleaner. The spot cleaner is just what it sounds like, it’s a small machine that you put on a spot and it cleans just that one spot, usually no bigger than a few inches around. The full sized cleaner is going to be about the size of your vacuum and it will allow you to clean areas big and small.

The way that the carpet cleaner works is that you will fill a tank with warm water and one with cleanser. Usually you have to push a trigger or push a button and it will release both cleanser and water at the same time over the area that you indicate. The cleanser and the water will hit the stain, brushes will agitate it, and then the carpet cleaner will pull the soiled water back into the machine leaving the floor clean and just slightly damp.

You will see when you start shopping that there is some differences between the carpet cleaner offerings. The first difference you will see is the number of brushes or bristles on the underside of the machines. The more brushes and bristles the better, as this is what will help break up the stains in the carpet. The less expensive machines generally have a lot less in the way of brushes and bristles.

You will also see a difference in water capacity. Many people don’t consider this an issue until they start cleaning large spaces. When you clean large spaces you will want to have as much clean water on board to start with as possible. If you choose the less expensive machine with the two gallon tank you are going to be changing it out a lot more often than if you had chosen the pricier machine with the five gallon tank.

A lot of the machines now have on board heaters. This is a really nice option because these machines make sure that the water is always the perfect temperature for breaking up stains and sanitizing the carpet to the best of your ability. The on board heater is a great option if you are going to be doing bigger spaces where the water has a chance to cool down.

As you can see, you have a lot of options when it comes to buying a carpet cleaner. Really look at all of the options and then consider the space that you will be cleaning. Try to meet half way between what you want and what you need so you get the most out of your carpet cleaner with each and every cleaning.

  1. As mentioned in your comprehensive article, the spot cleaner and the full sized cleaner are the two main types of carpet cleaners. I would like to make a recommendation for each of these.

With respect to a spot cleaner my research has led me to believe that Bissell is the way to go. They have a tremendous range of spot cleaners and have been making machines that clean carpets for many years. My pick here would be the Bissell 1200B SpotBot. Consumer reviews for this unit are excellent from sites all over the net – from Amazon to Best Buy to Epinions.

My pick for a carpet cleaner would be the Hoover F8100900 Platinum Collection Carpet Cleaner. It is not cheap at about 350USD but it has great consumer reviews and it is one of the few carpet cleaners that provides direct heat to the carpet to cut down drying time dramatically. It also has the ability to do some spot cleaning as well.
