Canon Battery Charger

Once you’ve bought an expensive digital camera, especially a branded one – let’s say a Nikon or a Canon, you obviously expect to get all the paraphernalia with it. It is also wise to use paraphernalia of the same brand as your digital camera. A lot of the time you might stay faithful to the type of camera you use – once a Kodak, always a Kodak, for example. However, you may not be so faithful with the accessories you use, especially if you end up losing one. For example, would you still go ahead and pay $50 for an original Canon battery charger if you knew a substitute was easily available for, let’s say $18?

That’s about the price difference between an original Canon battery charger and a substitute. Original canon battery chargers are also a little difficult to find. Most of the time, you will have to go to the retailer from whom you bought the camera in the first place. It is easier to find batteries than the battery charger. If you try buying online, you are sure to be tempted by the substitutes. These are quite low in price and they may not be real ‘Canon’ battery chargers and they pretty much charge everything – and usually mess them up!

Original canon battery chargers can be bought from the canon e-store. There are also quite a few other websites which will sell you original canon merchandise, including battery chargers. On the whole, different cameras require different chargers for their batteries, even within the same brand. Mostly cameras belonging to a particular range will be charged by one type of charger alone. For example, the CB-2LV battery charger can be used to charge the SD630, SD600, SD450, SD400, SD430 Wireless, SD300, SD200, SD30 and SD40 Digital Cameras.

However, a better option is to buy the Canon Battery Kit CR-560. This battery kit can charge two batteries at the same time and is compatible with the widest range of canon cameras and camcorders. In fact any Canon camera using the BP-500 series battery can be charged with this charger. It is even possible to use this in your car by connecting it to the cigarette lighter. The kit even acts as an external adapter to charge your camera’s batteries when it’s connected to an AC outlet. However, the biggest advantage is its compatibility. Considering that Canon has almost over a 100 varieties of cameras and camcorders this particular battery kit is compatible with over 20 models:

  • EOS D60
  • Optura 100MC
  • Optura 200MC
  • Optura Pi
  • PowerShot G1
  • PowerShot G2
  • PowerShot G3
  • PowerShot G5
  • PowerShot G6
  • PowerShot Pro1
  • PowerShot Pro70
  • ZR10
  • ZR20
  • ZR25 MC
  • ZR30 MC
  • ZR40
  • ZR45 MC
  • ZR50 MC
  • ZR60
  • ZR65 MC

It costs $180 when bought from the Canon e-store.

Another similar product is the battery charger CA-PS400 Power kit. This one is useful for charging the EOS range and the Powershots. Incidentally the Powershot and EOS happen to be Canon’s popular brands. A battery kit that can charge the batteries of two popular brands is definitely a must have. This power kit is also a dual charger – it can take two batteries at one go. It charges the BP-511 batteries. It takes about 90 minutes to fully charge one battery. This product can be used for:

  • EOS 20D
  • EOS 20Da
  • EOS 30D
  • EOS 40D
  • EOS 50D
  • EOS 5D
  • EOS D30
  • EOS D60
  • EOS Digital Rebel
  • PowerShot G1
  • PowerShot G2
  • PowerShot G3
  • PowerShot G5
  • PowerShot G6
  • PowerShot Pro1
  • PowerShot Pro70
  • PowerShot S80

The power kit also works as an AC adapter when coupled with the DC Coupler DR 400 for the D60 or D30. It costs $140.
