A bicycle roller is a kind of equipment for bicycle training that allows the user to ride a bicycle inside the home or in a gym in a stationary position. This is different from the stationary bike, which is not provided with wheels. The bicycle roller is usually made up of three drums or cylinders that serve as the rollers where a real bicycle can be mounted and pedaled. The front wheel rests on one roller while the rear wheel rests in between the two other rollers. A belt links the front roller to one of the rear rollers so that the front wheel will also in sync with the rear wheel. The effect is that the cyclist pedals the bike and the wheels move in the same manner as when the bicycle is rolling over the road surface. The only difference is that the bicycle remains in the same position.
A special challenge for the cyclist is maintaining the bike in the correct position over the rollers. Cyclists therefore use the bicycle roller to improve their balancing skill, which is required during those situations when the cyclists are riding as a pack for the purpose of reducing drag. Because of the possibility of the bicycle sliding off the rollers, all sharp objects should be removed from the area and the cyclist should wear his helmet.
Purchasing a bicycle roller is somewhat of a challenge because of the variety of features that are offered by various brands and models. Some of these features are flywheel belt guards, headwind fans, fork stands, magnetic resistance, and folding packages. The difficulty is choosing which of these features is most important for the rider. You may also opt for a bicycle roller that permits you to remove your front tire. With this setup, you have to connect the front part of your bicycle to the fork. This arrangement has the advantage of making it is easier for you to maintain your balance.
When riding a bicycle on a bicycle roller, the first step is to adjust the position of the rollers to fit the dimensions of your bicycle. The common strategy is to position the bike in such a way that the front roller is located before the front hub. The next step is to check if the tires have the correct inflation and whether they are in good condition. Then, you will need to position the rollers in such a way that you can grab a counter, table or door frame in case of a fall. Do not forget to remove any sharp and hard objects within the area. Of course, this is not as dangerous as when you are really riding on the road because there is no forward motion or momentum. If you slide off the rollers, you would not find yourself flying forward but you will only fall sideways.
After the above preparatory actions, it is time to position the bike over the rollers. Set the bicycle to high gear because you are more stable at faster speeds. After you have gained some experience, you may try using the lower gears. While holding on to a stationary object like a table, you will begin pedaling until such time that the wheels are spinning fast enough so that balance is easier to achieve. You may then release your hold from the table and focus on riding your bicycle. It is often easier to maintain our balance by fixing your gaze on a position that is a few yards ahead of you. You can change to a different gear when you feel that you are getting comfortable.
