Band Equalizer

Equalization, also known as EQ, is defined as the process of making use of digital algorithms or electronic elements that are passive or active, in order to alter frequency response characteristics of any given system. The electronic equipment that is used to reduce distortion in frequency is called an Equalizer. The ultimate aim or goal of equalization is to assist in achieving a mix of sound that allows vocals and instruments to all sound good together.

A band equalizer is a type of tool (hardware or sometimes, software), that is designed to act as any equalizer and make changes to the output of sound. The operator of the band equalizer sets various bands, within which it can make adjustments to the quality of sound. While making musical and other types of audio recordings, band equalizers are used to achieve a sound quality that is crisp and clear. Equalizers may also be used during the stage of Production in order to clean up the recordings further and get the best quality of sound that is possible. This equipment also finds its use as a part of sound systems used during live performances, to control quality.

The goal while using a band equalizer is not to make any drastic changes to the complete sound. It is rather to make adjustments within certain specific bands of the entire spectrum. This enables a person to be able to filter out specific, identifiable sounds and not change the entire signal as a whole. In the case of a live performing orchestra for instance, a sound engineer recording the performance would make use of a band equalizer in order to filter out unwanted sounds such as shuffling feet, feedback and other audio disturbances. It is also possible to isolate the sounds produced by various instruments in the recording. This is helpful because the sound engineer would be familiar with the frequency range of each instrument being used, so he/she would be able to ensure that the actual sound from the orchestra are not omitted accidentally while working on reducing background noise.

The person that operates a band equalizer would be able to make various adjustments and tweaks in order to achieve the quality and type of sound that is desired. The EQ (equalizer) levels need to be determined at the beginning. However, they may be adjusted as and when it is needed. A sound board is used for this purpose. It is a type of equipment that is rather large and makes allowance for extremely precise sound manipulation during live performances as well as recordings. The sound board is designed in such a way that the options are represented visually. This enables sound engineers to envision a map of the audio spectrum and thereby make the needed adjustments.

By using a band equalizer, a portion of the sound can be targeted during equalization, depending on the frequency and amplitude of the sound wave. This is especially useful in cases when one instrument drowns out the sound of another in an audio mix. A bass or audio equalizer in such a case can be used to make the weaker instrument sound louder by raising the gain or strength of its higher frequency or by lowering the gain of the low frequency in the louder instrument. As mentioned before, bleeding or leakage (recording of unwanted sounds) can also be reduced by making use of a band equalizer.

A band equalizer is available in different forms, usually as a component of an audio mixer, or stand-alone electronic equipment. In recent times, the use of an equalizer is increasingly in the form of software applications. Depending on the different characteristics of sound that is being edited, different band equalizers may be used. Extensive training and a good ear for sound are definitely needed to learn to use a band equalizer successfully. While training helps in achieving technical skills that are needed to understand the detailing of the equipment, a good ear is the ‘talent’ that is needed for optimum quality of results.
