ATX Motherboard

The ATX motherboard in your computer is sometimes referred to as the main board. It is the primary board inside your computer that connects your CPU, memory, drives, expansion slots and the other devices that are connected to your computer. The circuits that are in the motherboard on your computer allow the communication between all of the devices in your system. This circuitry is the most important part of the effective functioning of your computer. When the motherboard fails, your computer will cease to function.

You may hear the word chipset in relation to your motherboard and this is the core circuitry in the board. Most of the manufacturers of motherboards do not manufacture this circuitry. An ATX motherboard is a particular size board and is the most common in computers today. The larger the motherboard, the more space there is for expansion on your computer later. There are smaller size motherboards available and each size and form has its own use on the market such as the computers that are used in cars will use a different board than the ones in your desktop computer.

As the CPUs on the market continue to evolve and become more and more powerful, the motherboard must be able to keep up to accept those processors. This has caused the motherboard to evolve at the same rate as the processors on the market.

The main processor manufacturers have been working on their own design, which has led to different motherboards being used for each. This means that if you have a motherboard that is designed to accept an AMD processor, you will not be able to install an Intel processor.

There are also some ATX motherboards on the market that will accept dual processors. These are generally used on high end workstations and servers.

The components that are connected to the motherboard can be memory, power supplies and storage devices. The difference between one motherboard and another will be the number of these connections and their type.

The current trend in memory is DDR memory with DDR-2 becoming more popular as well. There are motherboards available that will accept both types of memory, but there will come a time when DDR-2 is the standard type that is used. You will have anywhere between two and four slots for your memory, but there are also some mini boards that only have one slot available.

The ATX motherboard will also provide connections for your hard drive as well. There is a bit of variation on the type of connection for this also. Most of the motherboards that are used today have provided two ATA connections for the hard drive, but there is a growing trend to offer both ATA and SATA.

You can also find a motherboard that will include a number of special features. Stereo sound capabilities on the motherboard are now possible when in the past it was only available as an expansion card.

Expansion slots are another important consideration on your choice of ATX motherboard. This is the best way to make sure that the features that you want can be added to your system later. Even though there are boards that have the features already on the motherboard, you should still make certain that there are sufficient expansion slots for the addition of other items later.

These are only a few of the considerations that you should make when you are choosing an ATX motherboard. The more you know about your motherboard, the better your decisions will be when it is time to select one. Remember, the motherboard is the main connection for everything in your computer system, so choose wisely.
