3G/EVDO Router

EVDO, EV-DO, and EV (Evolution Data Optimized) are all common terms for a frequently used type of router. EVDO technology incorporates the use of a wireless data signal (via radio signals) which often provides access to broadband Internet to the user. There are various complicated descriptive of how the EVDO router functions. Some of the techniques that are used for this device to operate properly include CDMA and TDMA (code division/time division multiple access).

The Design of EVDO Routers

EVDO routers were designed to work with a 1.25MHz bandwidth. The structure of the particular channel the router operates on is rather unique though. Also, the network uses packets so there are quite a few complications eliminated which exist in circuit switched networks.

What Makes the Channel Structure Unique?
One of the few things that set EVDO routers apart from other types of routers is the channel structure that is implemented in these devices. Basically, the channel used with EVDO is nowhere near the same as a typical 1xRTT channel. The main difference is that forward linking is accomplished as the channel is Time Multiplexed – meaning that the forward channel is used by just one mobile within a particular geographic distance. This will allow all mobile users to have a specified time slot within the forward traffic channel and when in optimal geographic areas they will receive stronger wireless signals.

How the Forward Channel Works
There are multiple time slots available within the forward traffic channel. Every time slot is 1.667ms in length. There are also overhead channels which are included within the stream. One example of one of these channels would be the Pilot which is responsible for assisting the mobile in locating specific channels. Another example of an overhead channel would be the MAC which is responsible for notifying the mobile when scheduled data exists. There is also a control channel which is used for cross-network data transfer.
